August 13, 2025 View all news A new Friends of the Earth Cork has been launched by supporters in the area and facilitated by Friends of the Earth Ireland. This new local group of Friends of the Earth has brought together local environmental advocates eager to strengthen grassroots action on climate and environmental justice across Cork City and County. With members hailing from a variety of backgrounds including community education, sustainability, and other local campaigns and initiatives, the group is excited to get involved in activity on local issues affecting people and the environment in Cork. Maria Quirke, spokesperson for Cork Friends of the Earth said:“Cork Friends of the Earth will be setting up county-wide networking events so new members can get to know one another, and to make good use of the skills and passions of Cork environmentalists in creating sustainability awareness and climate action in the county. Our Autumn campaign will involve a survey of the public's experience of Cork City bus services. We especially want to give a voice to people who are disproportionately affected by substandard public transport, like low-income workers, people with disabilities and the elderly. We hope the survey will record people's real-life experiences of the public transport system, and inform future development and improvements to sustainable transport infrastructure in Cork.” Aaron Downey, Global Citizenship Education and Activism Support Officer in Friends of the Earth Ireland said:“We are delighted to welcome the newest addition to the largest international network of grassroots environmental groups in Friends of the Earth. Joining other recently established groups in Dundalk, and Dún Laoghaire, it is clear there is a growing appetite for environmental activism that deals with local concerns and national issues. We look forward to groups like Cork Friends of the Earth getting active on the issues of warmer, more climate-friendly homes for renters, and challenging runaway data centre development and Liquefied Natural Gas terminals, as well as other topics affecting their communities We warmly welcome all interested individuals in the Cork area to get in contact or join [1]!"
