Dear Deputy,

You are my elected representative, and I am asking today that you use your position to ensure the Government makes good on its promise to update the planning regulations around solar power.

The current planning regulations uniquely penalise schools who wish to take part in the energy transition.  Schools and community buildings need to get planning permission to install even one solar panel. It is very expensive to get planning permission.

Businesses and homes are currently exempt, but schools and community buildings are not.  It is not fair.

We think the energy transition to renewable energy in Ireland will be made all the better, if communities, like schools can get involved.

Friends of the Earth have prepared a Parliamentary Question that you could ask, or you could request a Topical Issue Debate.

Suggested PQ: To ask the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage for information on his Department's review of siting and size conditions for rooftop solar panels on homes, and review of exemptions for educational and community buildings, as part of the current development of interim planning regulations; for information on the stated need to consider environmental assessment reporting before finalisation; when the interim planning regulations will be submitted to the Oireachtas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
