Check Your Message Message Subject: Edit the email subject line - (optional) Message Text: Dear (each MEP will get a separate, personalised email), I'm writing to you as someone who lives in your constituency. I’d like to ask you to vote in favour of a strong EU buildings directive that can both cut emissions and combat worsening energy poverty. During Tuesday’s vote on the Energy Performance in Buildings Directive (EPBD), it is essential that MEPs do not allow any watering down of the text and reject dependence on costly, polluting fossil fuels, especially gas. The EU’s inefficient building stock is responsible for 40% of our energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions. The energy price crisis, fuelled by the EU’s dependence on dirty gas, has already put millions more in energy poverty. This is not the time to be allowing any further investment in fossil fuels. We know that we need strong energy performance standards and a greater range of incentives for the rollout of renewable heating solutions like heat pumps. The Directive needs to target households and communities most at risk of energy poverty as they are feeling the brunt of the crisis. There are also concerns about the approach taken by Fine Gael’s European People’s Party with its focus on ‘hybrid’ boilers that risks locking homes into fossil fuel-based heating. Irish MEPs must reject last-minute exemptions and weasel words that risk opening the door to controversial alternative gases which would simply prolong fossil fuel use. We simply cannot allow concessions and escape clauses for fossil fuel interests that will leave families with expensive, polluting boilers running on fossil fuels for years to come. Rather than allowing a weakening of the Directive, MEPs should support clear provisions on phasing out polluting oil and gas boilers combined with robust social safeguards and supports for households at risk of energy poverty. Now is the time to revolutionise Ireland’s and Europe’s buildings, not for more fossil fuels by the back door. Yours sincerely etc, Edit the email text - (optional) Next Step - Preview your message → Categorised in: Energy Tagged with: No New Gas
