Commenting on the announcement of the results of the first offshore wind energy auction, Friends of the Earth Chief Executive, Oisín Coghlan said:

"This is a landmark day for Ireland. We just have to get this wind energy online by 2030. It’s the best way to get off dirty, expensive, imported fossil gas and power our future with clean, affordable and reliable Irish renewables.

"At the same time, we must make sure that coastal communities are properly consulted during planning and that we protect nature around the wind farms. And state agencies and civil society need to be properly resourced to make this possible.

"We can be proud of what we have already achieved in renewable power. Ireland is already a world leader at integrating wind energy onto our grid. Our offshore wind resource is one of the best in the world and developing it rapidly and responsibly is one way Ireland can contribute to the global imperative of protecting human civilization from complete climate breakdown."
