On March 11th, groups across the country will be taking action on data centres. Want to get involved? Join our phone bank and let your TD know how you feel about the Government handing over even more resources to Big Tech.

Data Centre lobbyists have a huge amount of power in Ireland. From special industry roundtables, dedicated trade groups and big industry conferences to private back-room meetings, it’s safe to say that Big Tech has the ear of the Irish Government.

It’s about to get worse - the Irish Government is about to hand out even more resources to the industry by forcing the Private Wires bill through the Dáil, a bill which would let data centres build out their own electricity networks across the country. This bill would let data centre operators dodge network taxes while still soaking up capacity on the public grid, with no limits on how big they can build or what they are ultimately used for.

Meanwhile, we see households and small businesses struggle to manage their electricity bills. Recently it was revealed that households pay twice as much for energy than data centres, and data centres gobble a quarter of all the energy in the country.

NO FEE FRIENDS EARTH DATA PROTEST 6Clean energy gets hoovered up by more and more data centre demand, and gas plants and fossil fuel pipelines are being expanded to feed the appetite of the industry. Data centres consume 23% of electricity in Ireland now, and need millions of megalitres of water a year to keep servers cool.

It’s time your TDs hear from you on what you think of their plans to give away more resources to one of the wealthiest industries on earth. You can make the call from anywhere!

We’ll be sharing our guide for a phone call script here soon. Keep an eye out for this!
