Presented to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy

Friends of the Earth presented on the Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the proposed Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Bill today to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy.

We put up a strong opposition to the Bill -  titled 'General Scheme of the Strategic Gas Emergency Reserve Bill 2025' - which will pave the way for a gas terminal in Clare. We warned the Oireachtas that the proposed LNG Bill would undermine climate law and weaken, rather than strengthen, Ireland’s energy security.

We urged the Committee to recommend that the Government not proceed with this Bill. Instead, the Government should undertake an updated energy security assessment that properly considers demand-side measures and the risks of increased LNG dependence.
